Climate sensitivity from radiative-convective equilibrium: A chalkboard approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Simple models for Earth's climate sensitivity (i.e. its temperature response to radiative forcing) are developed by combining the time-tested idealization of one-dimensional radiative-convective equilibrium (RCE) with simple yet quantitatively reasonable CO2 forcing and water vapor feedback. Along way, we introduce key paradigms including emission level approximation, forcing-feedback decomposition sensitivity, “Simpson's law” thermal emission. We also discuss feedbacks unaccounted in this RCE framework, as well differing variants all which may be ripe their own chalkboard treatments.

Sensitivity of Radiative–Convective Equilibrium Simulations to Horizontal Resolution
This paper investigates the impacts of horizontal resolution on the statistical behavior of convection. An idealized radiative–convective equilibrium is simulated for model resolutions ranging between 2 and 50 km. The simulations are compared based upon the analysis of the mean state, the energy and water vapor transport, and the probability distribution functions for various quantities. It is ...

متن کاملLand-Atmosphere Interaction and Radiative-Convective Equilibrium
I present work on several topics related to land-atmosphere interaction and radiativeconvective equilibrium: the first two research chapters invoke ideas related to landatmosphere interaction to better understand radiative-convective equilibrium; the last two research chapters use the framework of radiative-convective equilibrium to better understand land-atmosphere interaction. First, I calcul...
متن کاملNon-rotating and rotating radiative-convective equilibrium
Radiative-convective equilibrium (RCE), in which the radiative cooling in the atmosphere is balanced by the convective heating in a horizontally homogeneous environment, is a good starting point for studying tropical convection. It also provides an idealized framework to compare analogous simulations by global climate models (GCMs) which rely on convective parameterizations, and cloud-resolving...
متن کاملA Sensitivity Study of Radiative–Convective Equilibrium in the Tropics with a Convection-Resolving Model
Statistical-equilibrium (SE) states of radiative–convective systems in tropical oceanic conditions are simulated with a cloud ensemble model (CEM) in this study. Typical large-scale conditions from the Marshall Islands and the eastern tropical Atlantic regions are used to drive the CEM. The simulated SE precipitable water, column temperature, and relative humidity are only slightly higher than ...
